Dr. Nancy Reid, University of Toronto
The Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute developed a six-month thematic program on big data in 2015, with substantial funding from the Fields Institute, and support from PIMS, CRM and AARMS for activities across the country. By the end of this program, big data had given way to data science as the phrase du jour, and undergraduate and graduate programs in data science are being developed at a rapid pace. In this talk I will present my own views on aspects of data science research, with reference to lessons learned from the thematic program and the many initiatives developing since then. I will emphasize the role of statistical science in the new world of data science — both old and new statistical ideas seem to be in demand.
